Seeking historical artifacts from the airport

Do you have old photos, airline bag tags or other memorabilia from the former Greater Pittsburgh International Airport in Moon?

The Allegheny County Airport Authority is seeking historical artifacts for the "1952 Airport Terminal Building Historic Display" in the new terminal in Findlay.

Artifacts sought are those from the time the former terminal was in operation - 1952 to 1992 - and from the original terminal construction period prior to 1952 on what had been the 1,200-acre Bell dairy farm.

All artifacts would be reviewed for content and significance. If accepted, artifacts would be on loan for permanent or temporary display based on donor wishes.

All artifacts will be displayed in secured cases and returned to the donor.

Items could include old newspaper articles; photographs; souvenirs; airline materials such as tickets, bag tags, schedules, menus, etc.; and art and other memorabilia from the old terminal.

The site now is occupied by the Airside Business Park on Interstate 376 business loop, formerly Business Route 60.

Dominion Foundation gives $5,000 gift

The Dominion Foundation has presented $5,000 to The Salvation Army to help feed hungry families in Allegheny County.

Last year, The Salvation Army provided nearly 80,000 more meals to families than in 2008. As the need for providing food, clothing and shelter has risen, funding sources have diminished.

But The Salvation Army received a call from Dominion Foundation, which offered to help. Dominion Foundation is the philanthropic arm of Dominion, which is based in Richmond, Va., and serves retail energy customers in 12 states.

"It is a rare occasion that a nonprofit gets an unsolicited offer of support," Major Sandra Jackson, Allegheny County coordinator for The Salvation Army, said in a news release. "Dominion's $5,000 gift is a blessing that will go a long way to help feed hundreds of hungry families here in Allegheny County."

Dominion is one of the nation's largest producers and transporters of energy. It operates the nation's largest natural gas storage system.

Both a church and a social service organization, The Salvation Army began in London, England, in 1865. It provides critical services in 118 countries worldwide.

The 28-county Western Pennsylvania Division serves thousands of needy families through a variety of support services.
