Charity events

• The 2010 Pittsburgh Walk to defeat ALS is set for Sept. 11 at 9 a.m. at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium. ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a degenerative neuromuscular disease that has no cure and is always fatal. The ALS Association relies largely on the fundraising of the Walk to continue helping those affected by ALS. Registration is available at http://web.alsa.org/2010pittsburghwalk.

• The Palisades at McKees Point, 501 Water St., McKeesport, is hosting "Dance All Day 2010" on Sept. 18. The event includes workshops in line dancing from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and a dance from 6 p.m. to midnight. The cost is $40, which includes continental breakfast and lunch; to attend only the dance is $10. Proceeds benefit the Kristy Lasch Miracle Foundation, which assists young women who develop breast cancer. Call 412-461-7348.

• The Out of the Darkness walk is taking place at 10 a.m. Sept. 11 in Cedar Creek Park, Rostraver. Registration begins at 9 a.m. Proceeds benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Call 412-523-3860.

• The Southwestern Pennsylvania chapter of the American Red Cross is sponsoring the following safety classes from 6 to 10 p.m. at its Armstrong County center, Suite 4, 245 Butler Road, West Kittanning. Call 724-545-2733.

• The Mercy Parish Nurse and Health Ministry Program is sponsoring "America's Childhood Obesity Epidemic: Parish Nurses Can Make a Difference" from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Sept. 8 in room 2190, level 2, building D, UPMC Mercy.
