Air show in Moon spells road detours

The Wings Over Pittsburgh Air Show will offer free thrills for spectators but the inconvenience of road closures and detours for motorists today through Sunday near the 911th Airlift Wing in Moon.

The air show will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the 911th Airlift Wing on Business Loop 376 (formerly Business Route 60) at the Thorn Run interchange. Gates will close at 3 both days.

The highlight performers will be the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, whose flying times both days will be flexible because of the proximity to Pittsburgh International Airport's schedule of commercial flights.

Visitors can walk the grounds of the air force base and view displays such as the B-52 Stratofortress, the C-130 Hercules, the KC-135 Stratotanker and the F-18F Super Hornet.

The entertainment begins with a performance by the Air Force Tops in Blue, a military unit of amateur performers, at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Moon Park.

Motorists should be alert for these road closures today and Friday when the Thunderbirds are flying practice sessions starting at approximately 2:45 p.m. and ending at about 4:30:

• Business Loop 376 will be closed between I-376 Exit 57 and the Thorn Run Interchange at the 911th base entrance. Westbound traffic (from Pittsburgh) will be rerouted on I-376 to the Flaugherty Run Road exit (51) and east on Business Loop 376.

• Traffic traveling east from Beaver County will be detoured onto the Thorn Run Interchange to Coraopolis Heights Road, then right onto Beaver Grade Road, then right onto Montour Run Road and back onto Interstate 376 East.

On Saturday and Sunday, road closures and detours will be in effect from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Thorn Run interchange will be open to only pedestrian traffic. Traffic traveling west on Business Loop 376 will be detoured onto University Boulevard to Beaver Grade Road.

Traffic traveling east on Business Loop 376 will be detoured onto the Montour Run Road exit onto Montour Run Road to Beaver Grade Road.

On Saturday and Sunday when the Thunderbirds perform, (approximately 2:45 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.), Business Loop 376 will be closed between I-376 Exit 57 and University Boulevard. Westbound traffic will be detoured to continue on I-376 west to Exit 51.

Traffic traveling east from Beaver County will be detoured onto University Boulevard to Beaver Grade Road.
