Robbery linked to heroin, Carnegie police say
Thursday, September 09, 2010

A burglary of a Morrow Avenue home in Carnegie was part of a conspiracy by four individuals to steal money for heroin, borough police said.

Amanda Timco, 21, and Michael Barum, 25, both of Carnegie, turned themselves in and were charged Aug. 28 with burglary, theft, receiving stolen property and criminal conspiracy. Mr. Barum also was charged with impersonating a public servant.

Jamal Hatcher, 28, of Carnegie, was arrested by Port Authority Police Aug. 30 on the same charges plus a charge of making false reports to law enforcement. A fourth man, Cody Baum, 21, whose last known address was on Center Avenue in Carnegie, remains at large. He faces the same charges as Mr. Hatcher.

Police said the residents were lured from their home by calls from someone impersonating a Pittsburgh police detective who asked them to come to the Zone 1 police station.

When the residents left, the burglars entered the home and stole electronic items, including a laptop computer, Play Stations and a 32-inch flat panel television.

Carnegie Police Chief Jeffrey Harbin said the investigation was complicated and involved a lot of work because each suspect was tracked down individually.

All of the stolen items have been found and returned to the victims, and that took time, too, because the items had been sold, he said.
